What types of sensors can Cormit connect to?

Accepted Answer

Currently, Cormit can connect to water flow meter, depth sensor (in well or in reservoir/tank), ambient air/humidity/LUX sensor, soil moisture/temperature sensor. However, Cormit is a flexible platform and it can, in principal, connect to any sensor with an RS-R85 communications interface. We plan on adding water quality sensors soon.

How does remote monitoring work?

Cormit's field nodes (dataloggers) collect data from a variety of sensors and send that data to the cloud. Cormit displays the data and various metrics generated from the data by Cormit's analytic engine on Cormit's dashboard.

Continuously tracking various metrics related to well operation and aquifer performance to provide the basis for informed management of the well/aquifer system.

In addition to time-series sensor output, Cormit generates the following performance metrics; static water level, drawdown, sustainable yield, rate of refill, recovery time. It also shows long-term trends in these metrics.

What is the difference between a monitoring well and an operating well?

A monitoring well is only able to report static water level.  An operating well has a pump and, using a depth sensor in the well and a water meter on the outflow from the well, Cormit generates a much richer set of well/aquifer metrics.

What is sustainable yield and why is it important?

When a well pump is turned on, water output is initially high. As the pump continues to operate, the output drops and eventually reaches a stable level. That stable level is the sustainable output of the well.

Cormit does this in two different ways: Its alerts can be configured to warn of unusual water flows and serve as early warnings of leaks. Also, Cormit's detailed well/aquifer metrics help in establishing optimal pumping rates, detecting inefficiencies, preventing over-pumping, and enabling data-driven decisions that conserve water resources while maintaining adequate supply.

Alerts can be created for any sensor. User sets the trigger level and whether it applies to a rolling-time-period or to specified-hours-of-the-day. For example, alerts can be created to warn of low water levels in tank/reservoir, leaks, freeezing/roasting weather, high/low humidity.

How can I control well operation with Cormit?

Cormit is able to automatically control the operation of a well pump to maintain water level in a reservoir or tank. On the dashboard, you can set the depth of water in the tank/reservoir at which the well pump well be turned on or off.

Deployment involves installing sensors and Cormit nodes in the field, and setting up the nodes on the dashboard. The installation of depth sensors and water meters would typically be performed by the customer's well contractor.

What power source does the monitoring equipment need?

Cormit's nodes run on 120/240 VAC. However, they can be set up to operate on 12 VDC power for deployment in situations where utility power is unavailable and solar PV/battery system is the source of power.

Whereas on the time-series graphs on the dashboard, data is shown on an hourly basis, data is communicated from the field nodes to the cloud database much more frequently to provide the high resolution data stream needed to generate well/aquifer performance metrics.

Yes, all data is stored in the cloud and accessible through time series reports. You can export data to an Excel file for reporting or for further analysis or modeling.

Absolutely. Cormit will report water usage, detect leaks, alert you to high/low temperatures and humidity, generate the data needed for reporting compliance, automatically operate wells to maintain water level in tank/reservoir, and allow you to monitor your aquifer levels and performance.

What is a cycling well?

In a cycling well, the pump rate exceeds the well refill rate, so that the well pump cycles on and off during a call-for-water cycle. The repeated cycling perturbs the aquifer. Monitoring the well output and the partial recovery of the well during these cycles produces a rich data set that can be mined to generate various metrics of well/aquifer performance.
